Keeping up with competing businesses
Obviously, your company can't have zero tech support, not in this tougher and more competitive business environment. To keep up with competing businesses and with growing needs as your business expands, you should, at the very least, make sure that your company's basic IT functions are secure. This would include setting up a back-up plan to protect company records and files are protected and that they can be retrieved in case they are deleted because of technical glitches.
The question then becomes, should you hire onshore tech support or should you outsource? Hiring an onshore tech person or tech team is perfectly fine. The bottom line should always be: your company's IT requirements, your budget for this IT requirement, and your access to the talents that can meet those IT requirements.
If you have the budget or your tech support needs can be met by a highly skilled onshore network administrator, then keep your IT in-house. But if you are looking to save on costs, have several IT support needs, and can't find tech support at the skill level you require, outsourcing is a sensible option for your company.
Here to stay
Some would think that with the arrival of newer technologies that make managing tech issues easier, there won't be a need for IT support. But the truth is, tech support - both from onshore employees and IT outsourcing companies - is here to stay. The need for tech support is not disappearing, it's just evolving: from handling nut and bolts of machines to more complex and higher level and newer IT such as creating a cloud-based backup and developing a communications platform for a firm's desktops, smartphones, notebooks, and tablets.
Whether building a tech team onshore or hiring outsourced IT support, make sure that you work only with the best people that your resources can afford. At the very least, your tech team should be able to manage your company's IT backbone, keep it running consistently well so the entire company won't be hampered by technical glitches. Ask your technical support team to develop an IT plan for you. This should be custom-made for your company's requirements and for the industry where your business belongs.
