Making a Minecraft Map: Tips and Tricks

Have you ever tried to finish a minecraft custom map, but couldn't?
Was a puzzle ever too hard, or a parkour jump to far?
Was a clue too well hidden, or a mystery too mysterious?
The challenge you face is far less than the challenge the map's creator faced. Somebody had to make that puzzle, test that parkour, hide that clue, and write that mystery!
I have compiled a list of tips and tricks I regularly use to make maps better, and faster.
  • It is almost completely necessary for you to download an exterior editing program. I use Mc-Edit, and I don't know where I would be without it. A program's( like Mc-Edit) most basic and important function is the ability to to copy and paste blocks and entities. Want to make pyramids? Make one and copy and paste! Other functions of these programs include the ability to change block's size, and add or delete blocks at a large scale. Mc-Edit also allows for the download of user created "filters". Filters allow capabilities such as making custom villager trades, custom mob drops, custom potion effects, and more. One filter I recommend is the "CreateRotatedSolids" filter by Sethbling. You should really check out all his filters.
  • When placing a long line of blocks horizontally, use commands for speed. By typing in "/effect username 1 (speed) (time)" you can increase your walking speed enormously. Just hold down shift and place the blocks at lightning speed.
  • When placing blocks quickly it is faster to click rapidly than to hold down.
  • If you are building on a survival multiplayer server, clicking on an adult animal with milk bucket will make it younger! Awesome!
  • When building with red-stone, remember some red-stone can be replaced with a single command block. To get a command block type "/give username 137" You must be in creative to use it.
  • Spend five minutes looking at all the possible command block commands on the minecraft wiki. It helps a lot.
  • Have a basic understanding of red-stone. Also learn this from the wiki.
  • Use an anvil and a name tag to name all mobs. This is always fun.
  • Find a cool seed to start all your maps on, or sometimes just use a super flat world.
  • All wayz speel chek you're maps. I HTE porly speled sign nd boks
Thank you for reading these tips and tricks! I hope you use them and make some great maps. Did you know you can sumbit maps to Pig-Maps?
